FGCU women tops in A-Sun

FGCU’s women once again earned the title of preseason favorite in the Atlantic Sun Conference preseason poll as voted on by the league’s eight head basketball coaches and the media and released Thursday by the A-Sun.

The Eagles picked up the top billing in the coaches’ poll for the third straight season and the sixth time in seven years. They took the top position in the media poll for the seventh straight season.

Eagles reigning conference player of the year Whitney Knight was named the preseason player of the year. Kaneisha Atwater earned preseason defensive player of the year.

With 64 points and all eight first-place votes, the Eagles’ first-ever unanimous first-place billing stands 12 points ahead of in-state rival Stetson University.

The Eagles season begins on Nov. 13 in Greensboro, N.C., against North Carolina A&T. The team returns for the home opener against FAU on Nov. 17.
