Wolfpack crush Seahawks 50-19
It was a long, stormy Friday night for the Cape Coral Seahawks (1-1) who were crushed 50-19 by South Fort Myers in a game held up more than an hour by lightning.
“We kind of embarrassed our fans,” Seahawks coach Larry Gary said. “And ourselves.”
It might be a game the Seahawks will like to forget, but it’s not likely that Gary will let them forget it any time soon.
“We’ve got to get back to the drawing board,” Gary said. “We’ve got to find some players.”
The Wolfpack (2-0) put up 29 points in a storm-wracked second quarter, including three touchdown runs by E’Quan Dorris. Dorris had 139 yards rushing on 18 first-half carries, ending the night with four touchdowns and 229 yards on 21 carries.
The delay didn’t do the Seahawks any favors. The time off allowed South coach Anthony Dixon to use Dorris more than he had intended.
“We really don’t want to run the ball 30 times a week,” Dixon said. “But if that’s what it takes for us to be competitive. I didn’t want the lightning delay, but it was like starting over again for him.”
It was 50-7 after three quarters, and two late Seahawks scores didn’t do much to improve Gary’s disposition.
“It was a close game until (South) built their confidence,” Gary said. “And they got wired. Our guys were dead.”
Isaac Washington had 118 yards rushing, including a 53-yard touchdown run for the Seahawks.
Cape’s Keashawn McCoy scored late in the game on a 45-yard catch and run on a pass from Maurice Flournoy.
“We’ve got a week to get it right,” Gary said. “We’ve got a week to find some players.”
The game was held up with 7:41 in the second quarter by a pair of lightning delays. The second alarm sounded just as the teams returned to the field at the end of the first delay. Play did not resume until after 9:30 p.m.
After a scoreless opening period, there were three touchdowns in less than four minutes in the second quarter.
The Wolfpack drove down the field on a 65-yard drive that was capped by Dorris’ eight-yard run on a direct snap.
Dorris fumbled on South’s next possession, with Craig Small scooping up the loose ball and running it in 33 yards for a Cape touchdown.
The tie didn’t last long. Willie Johnson ran the kickoff back 76 yards to put South back out front.
Things went all South’s way once the second quarter resumed after the lightning delay.
Dorris scored on another direct snap from a yard out for a 21-7 Wolfpack lead. South blocked a punt right before halftime, taking over at the Cape 19. That set up a 16-yard Dorris TD run with 11.9 seconds before intermission. Ke’Shon Murray added a two-point conversion.
Fa’Janae Gotay added a 40-yard TD run in the third quarter. The game went to a running clock later in the third quarter after Dorris’ fourth touchdown. Riley Ware added a four-yard TD for South before the period ended.
“We’re going to fix it,” Gary said. “I wish we could have played better. But we’ll get it right. We’ll fix it.”
