Miracle win two at Jupiter
The Fort Myers Miracle swept a doubleheader from the Jupiter Hammerheads Tuesday, taking a 5-2 win in game one and 6-1 victory in game two at Roger Dean Stadium.
In game one, the Hammerheads got on the board after a miscue in right field. With one out, Justin Bohn coaxed a walk off Miracle starter Kohl Stewart.
On MLB rehabilitation, Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton popped out to third base in foul territory for the second out. Then, Brian Anderson doubled into right field. Bohn advanced to third and then scored on an error by Chad Christen-sen to put the Hammerheads up 1-0.
The Miracle took the lead in the top of the third against Jupiter starter and another MLB rehabber Jarred Cosart. With one out, Engelb Vielma sliced a base hit into left. Aderling Mejia drew a walk and then Mitch Garver reached on an infield single. Logan Wade chopped a grounder to second base and was retired, but Vielma scored to tie the game. With runners at second and third, Christen-sen tripled into right field to drive in a pair and the Miracle jumped in front, 3-1.
Jupiter cut the Miracle lead to one with a two-out run. James Roberts rolled a base hit up the middle into center field, then moved to third on an error by Zack Granite. Rodrigo Vigil then drove in Roberts with an infield single, 3-2.
In the top of the seventh, the Miracle padded the lead with a two-run double from Logan Wade. Jupiter reliever Tyler Kinley took over and issued a one-out walks to Mejia and Garver. Wade then stroked a double to right and both baserunners rounded third to put the Miracle on top 5-2.
Miracle starter Kohl Stewart picked up the win with six strong innings. Stewart (7-8) gave up a pair of two unearned runs on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
Cosart (0-2) was the losing pitcher in his rehab appearance. In four innings, surrendered three runs on five hits with two walks and four punchouts.
Jeff Reed recorded a perfect seventh to notch his first save with the Miracle this season.
In game two, the Miracle broke a scoreless tie in the fourth. With one out, Tanner Vavra drew a walk from Hammerheads’ reliever Jose Adames. Garver then laced a base hit into center field and Vavra scored from first base.
Wade followed with a triple into center to drive in Garver. With Christensen at the plate, Adames (5-5) threw a wild pitch and Wade raced home.
Restarting the rally, Christensen earned a walk. Mejia followed with a single through the left side. Jason Kanzler rolled into a fielder’s choice that retired Mejia at second and left runners on the corners. The Miracle then executed a double steal. Kanzler swiped second and Christensen broke for home and scored. Granite completed the five-run fram with a line drive hit to right that brought in Kanzler, 5-0.
Granite added a run for the Miracle in the sixth with an RBI ground out.
Starter Luke Westphal exited the game after five scoreless innings. Westphal (5-5) scattered five hits and two walks while fanning five. Todd Van Steensel struck out the side in a scoreless sixth.
In the seventh, Matt Summers allowed a solo home run to Felix Munoz, but recorded the final three outs to seal a 6-1 win.
The Miracle (74-61, 36-29) complete the series in Jupiter with a 1:05 p.m. at Roger Dean Stadium against the Hammerheads (64-71, 29-36) on this afternoon. The game will not be broadcast.
