Opening the volleyball season at home Wednesday night put the Baker Bulldogs somewhat at ease as a very young squad.

They relied on veteran Amanda Gross, who came through with a team high 8 kills and 4 digs in leading a straight set 25-8, 25-8, 25-12 victory over East Lee County. Alicia Marzullo and Taylor each added four kills while setter Ashley Revis did her job to the tune of 15 assists.

“We lost a lot of upperclassmen from last season,” said Bulldogs coach Rene Van Horn. “We’re working on our communicating as we go.”

The Bulldogs (1-0) host Lehigh Thursday night.

Island Coast 3, Cypress Lake 0: Mikaelah Monahan served up 12 Aces to go with 10 digs Tuesday night to lead the Gators to a season opening straight set victory at Cypress Lake 25-19, 25-13, 25-14.

Jordan Gainley also contributed 10 digs and Megan Smith added five kills for the Gators (1-0), who make their home court debut next Tuesday against North Fort Myers.
