Ida Baker lets lead slip away, battles back to win

2 min read

Ida Baker pulled out a 9-6 victory Tuesday at Naples after squandering a 5-0 lead only to mount a four-run rally in the seventh inning to win the game.

Jordan Pinto pitched the final 3 2/3 innings in relief to pick up the win. He allowed two runs and struck out five in that span.

Darren LaTorre contributed two hits, including a double, and drove in four runs to lead the Bulldogs. Andy Fonseca also doubled.

Naples wiped out the 5-0 deficit with four runs in the third inning and two in the sixth to grab a 6-5 lead.

Christian Profitt got the game-winning rally started in the seventh with a leadoff single. After back-to-back botched sacrifice bunts, a passed ball plated the tying run. A bases-loaded walk plated the go-ahead run and LaTorre finished off the rally with a two-run ground ball to second that was misplayed for an error.

The Bulldogs (15-4) play at North Fort Myers next Tuesday.

Gulf Coast 5, Mariner 0: Mariner was the victim of a perfect game pitched by Gulf Coast’s Michael Zimmerman Tuesday night.

Zimmerman struck out 10 Bulldogs in the shutout victory. Tim Watters (6-3) absorbed the loss for the Tritons, pitching two innings while surrendering seven hits and five earned runs.

The Tritons (11-8) host East Lee County on Wednesday.

Cape Coral 12, Lely 0: Kyle Arjona (6-2) pitched six scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out three, and drove in two runs with a pair of hits to highlight Cape’s shutout victory Monday at Lely.

Jose Valmont and Hunter Bontrager each drove in two runs with a pair of hits. Valmont also scored four runs as the Seahawks scored four runs in the fourth and five in the sixth to extend the lead.

The Seahawks (12-9) host Cypress Lake on Thursday.

Lake Gibson 3, Island Coast 1: Joey Theune gave up three runs while striking out seven over six innings in Island Coast’s loss to Lake Gibson Tuesday in the Tyler Emmons Tournament in Bradenton.

Cade Macalouso contributed a double for the Gators (9-9), who play again Thursday against an opponent to be determined.
