I-Coast splits a pair at Bradenton
Island Coast played two games Monday in the Tyler Emmons Tournament in Bradenton, splitting the pair by earning a 3-0 victory over St. Stephen’s in the second game.
The day started on a down note as Windermere Prep pounded Gators starter and loser Paul Wiegandt, who was making his first varsity start, for 10 runs, five earned, in 2 1/3 innings of a 10-2 rout. Miguel Castro tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.
Cade Macalouso delivered an RBI single in the losing effort.
“We are the definition of a .500 club,” said Gators coach Clint Montgomery. “Half the games we show up, half the games we don’t.”
The Gators showed up in the second as winning pitcher Dave Mata (2-2) allowed one hit while striking out five over four scoreless innings. The Gators were ahead 1-0 in the seventh inning when Alex Nazario and Macalouso provided some insurance with RBI singles.
The Gators (9-8) play Lake Gibson on Tuesday before officially going on spring break.
Ida Baker 11, LaBelle 1: Jordan Pinto drove in three runs and Chris Menendez gave up one run over four innings to lead Baker’s victory Monday at LaBelle.
C.J. Schrowe came through with three hits with Ryen Clay and Luke Endsley each contributing two hits for the Bulldogs (15-4), who travel to Naples on Tuesday.
