FGCU women maintain top 20 ranking in poll
In the middle of the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship, the top-seeded FGCU women’s basketball team maintained its No. 20 ranking in the AP Top 25 released on Monday.
The Eagles stood strong with the same ranking as last week. The Eagles (28-2) are just six points behind No. 19 George Washing-ton, which clinched the Atlantic 10’s automatic bid Sunday with a 75-62 win over Dayton. The Eagles handed GW (29-3) one of its three losses on the season.
With the A-Sun semifinal approaching, the Eagles’ record is the fourth-highest mid-major in the poll, trailing only undefeated Prince-ton at No. 13, Chattanooga at No. 17 and No. 19 GW. All three have clinched automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.
With 26 wins in their last 27 games, the Eagles’ run is the fourth best in the nation, only shorter than No. 1 Con-necticut, No. 13 Princeton and No. 17 Chattanooga.
FGCU clinched its fifth straight Atlantic Sun regular season championship and owns the No. 1 seed with home court advantage throughout the tournament with the championship set for Sunday.
At No. 20, the Eagles are ahead of Texas A&M, Northwestern, Ohio State, Seton Hall and California in the poll.
