Baker posts 8th win with late rally
Ida Baker kept the unbeaten streak to start the season in tact Friday night by pulling out an eight-inning 4-1 win at Port Charlotte.
Jordan Pinto pitched the final two innings, striking out six, to post the Bulldogs’ eighth straight win. Bryce VanHorn started the game and struck out four, leaving with the score tied 1-1.
In the eighth, Christian Profitt started the game-winning rally with a fly ball to right field that was misplayed for an error, Profitt winding up on second base. Cameron Farmer reached on a bunt single and stole second. Darren LaTorre was intentionally walked to load the bases.
That brought Giani Williams to the plate, who lashed a two-strike single down the left field line to score two runs. The Bulldogs plated another run on a passed ball to seal the win and Pinto closed it out.
The Bulldogs (8-0) host North Fort Myers on Tuesday.
Cape Coral 8, Lely 0: Alex Perez drove in two runs to highlight Cape Coral’s shutout victory over Lely Friday night.
Shane McClanahan (2-0) struck out nine batters and allowed just one hit over four innings to earn the victory.
The Seahawks (7-1), who took advantage of four Lely errors, play at Cypress Lake on Tuesday.
Island Coast 7, North Fort Myers 3: Hank Owens (1-0) pitched seven innings Friday night, allowing two hits while striking out seven to help Island Coast top North Fort Myers.
Owens also doubled and drove in a run with two hits. Felix Camacho drove in two runs with four base hits and David Mata drove in two runs with a pair of hits. Anthony Churlin and Cade Macalouso each contributed two base hits.
A ground ball down the third base line followed by an errant throw to first base led to the run that earned the Gators a 3-2 lead for good en route to the victory.
The Gators (2-4) host Cypress Lake on Wednesday.
Mariner 4, Cypress Lake 1: Six scoreless innings by winning pitcher Andrew Arsenault (1-0) aided Mariner’s victory Friday at Cypress Lake.
Dante Ciminati (2-for-3) drove in two runs with a double while Mason Eicher had two hits and scored twice for the Tritons.
Mariner broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the fifth and tacked on two more in the seventh.
The Tritons (4-3) play at Golden Gate on Tuesday.
Oasis 12, Marco Island 4: Kevin Newton drove in three runs with a pair of hits while Josh Morales plated three runs with a double to lead Oasis’ victory over Marco Island on Friday.
Zavier Bravo contributed a double to the Sharks’ cause. Winning pitcher Austin Brock (1-0) struck out five and allowed two hits through 4 2/3 scoreless innings of work. The Sharks (5-2, 1-0 district) play at First Baptist on Monday.
Softball
Cape Coral 10, Lely 5: Makenzie Buss went 4-for-4 with a double, scored three runs, stole three bases and added one RBI to lead Cape Coral’s victory Friday over Lely.
Buss (6-2) picked up the win on the mound as well, striking out three. Danielle Smith (3-for-4) tripled and drove in a run, Heather Dubay (3-for-4) added a double, and Ally Slaughter (2-for-4) drove in a pair of runs and scored a twice. Cheyenne Krolczyk also contributed two hits and an RBI.
After taking a six-run lead through two innings, Lely struck back with five in the third. The Seahawks tacked on their remaining runs to nail down the win.
The Seahawks (7-2) play at Cypress Lake on Tuesday.
Cypress Lake 11, Mariner 10: After Mariner forced a 10-10 tie with a run in the top of the seventh inning, Cypress Lake answered with a two-out walk-off line drive hit to center to pull out a one-run victory Friday night.
Lindsey Nelson led the Tritons with four RBI on three doubles with Amanda Myers driving in three runs with two hits. Amber Likus also contributed two hits. Abby Love (0-1) took the loss on the mound.
The Tritons (4-7) host Island Coast on Monday.
North Fort Myers 18, Island Coast 0: North Fort Myers plated 11 runs in the first inning and seven more in the second to wipe out Island Coast in three innings Friday night.
Sajarie Jones slapped an inside-the-park home run and Shelby Coyne drove in three runs with three hits to lead the Red Knights (7-1), who play at Ida Baker on Tuesday.
