Baseball season heats up
While Major League ballplayers grabbed the headlines this week by reporting to Spring Training camps, the high school baseball season starts heating up.
Mariner, Island Coast, Cape Coral, Ida Baker, North Fort Myers and Bishop Verot all are in action tonight. All play on their home field with the exception of unbeaten Ida Baker (4-0), which is visiting South Fort Myers. Their softball counterparts also are in action tonight.
Lehigh and Dunbar are the only two Lee County public schools still alive in the FHSAA boys’ basketball playoffs.
Both play for regional titles this weekend and both have the home floor advantage. Dunbar goes for the Region 4A-3 championship Friday against Tempa Berkeley Prep. Lehigh hosts Tampa Jefferson Saturday in the Region 6A-3 finals. Winners earns a spot in the state final four next week in Lakeland.
Dunbar (19-7) is making its first appearance in the regional finals in seven years after beating Bishop Verot’s stall tactics 30-21 Tuesday night. It ended the Vikings season at 12-18, the first losing record in 13 seasons under coach Matt Herting.
Lehigh is in the regional finals for the second straight year and is preparing to win the title this time.?
Dunbar’s girls’ basketball team played in its third state championship game in four years Wednesday night, suffering a heartwrenching 68-62 overtime loss to Lake Highland Prep. The Tigers won the state championship in 2012.
A three-point basket with 10 seconds left in regulation by Highland proved to be the play that denied the Tigers a second state title.
