Eagles hosting baseball opener
FGCU makes its baseball season debut at 6:30 p.m. Friday under the lights at Swanson Stadium when the Eagles welcome the Chippewas of Central Michigan for the first of a four-game opening weekend series.
Eagles coach Dave Tollett will hand the ball to All-American ace Mike Murray, who is looking to build upon a historic sophomore season.
With a 1 p.m. doubleheader scheduled on Saturday, FGCU will send freshman lefty Devin Smeltzer to the mound to make the first start of his collegiate career in game one. He came to FGCU after being drafted in the 33rd round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres.
Junior Brady Anderson gets the ball for the second half of the doubleheader after a stellar close to last season when he posted a 5-3 record with a team-leading seven saves.
The four-game series concludes at 11:30 a.m. Sunday
