District 4A-11: Dunbar finally turned the tables on Bishop Verot in district championship matchups.
The Vikings had faced the Tigers in six of the last eight title games and was riding a 5-0 streak when the two met Friday night in the District 4A-11 final at LaBelle. This time, the No. 1-seeded Tigers crushed the No. 3 Vikings 64-21.
Verot (11-17) advances to the Region 4A-3 quarterfinals at Lincoln Park on Thursday.
“We got behind early and abandoned the game plan,” said Vikings coach Matt Herting. “Then things just blew up.”
Friday’s loss was both shocking and disappointing considering the Vikings lost to the Tigers 43-41 during the regular season. It also seals the Vikings’ first losing record in 13 years under Herting.
Verot’s leading scorer was Thaddeus Ward with just six points.

Region 6A-3: Defense was paramount in Barron Collier’s 39-20 victory over Island Coast in the Region 6A-3 quarterfinal playoffs last Thursday.
The loss ends the season for the Gators, who were kept scoreless for most of the first half while forcing 31 turnovers.
The Cougars’ game plan was to stop Leanne Ellis and Cherelle Washington, the Gators’ two leading scorers, holding them to just 10 points.
Region 5A-3: Cape Coral (17-11) advanced in regional playoffs by pulling out a 33-32 victory on the road at Lemon Bay last Thursday.
“It was a good team victory,” said Seahawks co-coach Kirk Myers. “We gave a good defense effort tonight.”
The Seahawks played at Cypress Lake in Tuesday’s regional semifinal.
Region 4A-3: The historic season of firsts ended for Oasis, which was making its first appearance in the regional playoffs after making its first appearance in the district championship game, only to finish as district runner-up, also a first in school history.
All of that ended Thursday night with a season-ending 56-19 beat-down at the hands of Lincoln Park in the Region 4A-3 quarterfinals in Fort Pierce.
