Cape, Baker ousted in district openers
Both Cape Coral and Ida Baker were knocked out of district boys’ basketball contention Monday night, suffering defeats on the road in the first round of tournament play.
C.J. Lewis was the lone player to reach double figures for Cape Coral, collecting 10 points in the No. 5-seeded Seahawks’ 44-24 loss at No. 4 Immokalee.
The Indians jumped out to an early lead and held off the Seahawks (8-17) with their second-chance scoring opportunities and a good transition game.
The Indians advance to Wednesday’s semifinal round of the District 5A-12 tournament at 7 p.m. at Mariner, the No. 1 seed and tournament host.
No. 2 seeded Golden Gate, which drew a bye into the semifinal round by virtue of their seeding, faces Lely, a 78-40 winner over Cypress Lake Monday. That semifinal matchup tips off at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
In District 6A-11, Baker was beaten by North Fort Myers 60-49. Derrick Loza poured in 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs (4-21), but got little help from teammates.
North Fort Myers, the No. 4 seed, advances to the semifinal round on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at No. 1 Charlotte. No. 3-seed Island Coast travels to No. 2-seed Venice to face the Indians at 7 p.m. in the other semifinal matchup.
Championship games in both districts are slated for 7 p.m. on Friday.
Oasis begins District 4A-11 play Tuesday against Bishop Verot at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at LaBelle. The winner takes on No. 2-seed LaBelle at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the semifinal round with the champion to be crowned Friday night.
Softball
Island Coast 15, Oasis 4: Island Coast opened the regular season Monday night with a runaway victory at Oasis.
Julia Feliciano belted three home runs to lead the Gators. Sheila Perez drove in five runs with one double and a couple of singles while Macy Chase contributed a double. Riley Hare (1-0) was credited with the pitching decision.
The Gators (1-0) travel to Lehigh on Tuesday.
