Gators ring up Seahawks
Island Coast took advantage of shorthanded Cape Coral to run away with a 68-36 victory Tuesday night at Cape.
Several banged-up Seahawks sat out to rest for next week’s district, helping the Gators to open up the offense.
Four Gators hit double figures led by Colin Chisolm with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Matt Jeannelas added 14 points and five rebounds, Gabe Muhammad with 12 points and five each rebounds, assists and steals. Matt Whitehead rounded out the quartet with 10 points.
The Gators (13-10) host Charlotte Thursday night and close out the season Friday at Mariner. The Gators and Tritons are both undefeated against city opponents this season.,
“We would be playing for the unofficial city championship,” said Gators coach Greg Coleman.
Mariner 68, Gulf Coast 39: Rodney Hunter reeled off another 26 points Tuesday night as Mariner crushed Gulf Coast.
“Rodney scores in bunches, like he had 11 of his 26 in the first quarter,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “He’s a gifted scorer. Sometimes he’s quiet about it and other times like tonight you know he’s scoring according to the defense.”
Hunter also grabbed nine rebounds with Sean Kostyk contributing 12 points. Scoring was balanced overall as 10 Tritons contributed points.
The Tritons (18-5) host Riverview Thursday night.
Girls Basketball
District 4A-11 at Dunbar: Kelsie Arentsen hit a key jumpshot at the free throw line in the final three minutes to give Oasis a four-point lead and momentum down the stretch to claim a 50-44 win Tuesday night over Bishop Verot.
The district semifinal win is the first in school history for the Sharks (14-9), now guaranteed their first trip to the regional playoffs next week. They meet Dunbar in Thursday’s district championship game.
“Kelsie’s shot was the turning point in the game,” said Sharks coach Sam Wood. “It was a good game. We are very happy with the way we played as a team tonight. The girls are really excited.”
Samantha Wood led the Sharks with a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan Westendorf added 13 points and six assists to the mix.
