Seahawks win third in a row
Cape Coral High picked up its third straight win for the first time this season on the strength of a 57-55 victory Wednesday night at The Nest over Canterbury and former Cape High coach Darren Wallace.
“They are a good team and very well coached,” said Seahawks coach Tom Kenna.
Canterbury led by one point late in the game before Cape opened a three-point lead. After the Cougars closed within two with a free throw, they drove that lane for a potential game-tying layup, but it was off the mark and the Seahawks grabbed the rebound with time running out to preserve the win.
C.J. Lewis led the Seahawks in scoring for the third straight game with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Lawrence Perez added eight points and Brandon Alcide seven.
The Seahawks (8-12) travel to Cypress Lake Thursday looking for their fourth straight win.
Mariner 60, Dunbar 57: Rodney Hunter, the newest member of the career 2,000-point club, added to his total with 24 points Wednesday night in a three-point win at Dunbar.
“We were up most of the game,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “It was a hard-fought game on the road. Dunbar played well, but we got the win. It was a battle, but we were able to lead at the end. You have to win games like this to compete for a state title.
Jahmel Myers added nine points for the Tritons (15-4), who host Fort Myers on Friday.
Cardinal Mooney 56, Bishop Verot 46: It has been 13 years since Bishop Verot experienced a losing season, but after Wednesday’s loss at Mooney the Vikings are assured of that at 9-12 with a week remaining in the season.
Their next opponent is Charlotte Thursday at Verot.
Thaddeus Ward topped the Vikings with 19 points with Matt Medovich adding 13. The high-point scorer belonged to Rand McMahon of Mooney with 29 points.
Mooney improves to 20-1 with the 10-point win.
