Boys have week to be at their peak
Having just completed a two-week holiday break from classrooms and competition, boys’ soccer teams have just one week left to make sure they have reached their peak of performance for the all-important district and state tournaments.
Girls’ teams begin to sort out which ones will advance to regionals in their district tournaments this coming week.
Ida Baker hosts the girls’ District 3A-13 tournament starting Tuesday with four games scheduled. No. 2-seed Mariner faces seven-seed Island Coast in the opening game at 1 p.m. No. 5 Cape Coral tangles with South Fort Myers at 3 p.m., top-seeded North Fort Myers meets East Lee County at 5 p.m. and third-seed Baker plays Lemon Bay at 7.
Semifinal games on Thursday determine which two teams lock down spots in the regionals then play for the district title on Friday.
No. 2-seed Oasis in District 2A-12 earned a first-round bye into the semifinals at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Bishop Verot. The Sharks await the winner between Dunbar and Clewiston, which collide Tuesday at Clewiston.
Top-seeded Bishop Verot awaits the LaBelle-Gateway winner for its 7 p.m. semifinal on Wednesday. The championship game is Friday at Verot.
Football
Island Coast senior defensive back Ryan Pulley (6-0, 190) was selected to the Florida Class 5A All-State second team defense that was released on Wednesday. Newspaper editors and reporters across the state voted on their area selections.
Pulley’s Island Coast teammate, junior linebacker Zac Lackman (6-1, 210), earned honorable mention.
Cape Coral senior wide receiver Rasheen Bailey (5-7, 160) was selected to the third team offense.
Two South Fort Myers teammates earned mention on the Class 6A All-State squad. senior Antwan Dixon (5-8, 175) was named to the second team defense while junior defensive back Andre Polk (6-2, 185) collected honorable mention status.
Boys Basketball
Bishop Verot 58, St. John Neumann 42: Thaddeus Ward scored 18 points to lead Bishop Verot’s victory over St. John Neumann Wednesday night.
Stephen Wagner contributed 14 points toward the Vikings’ wire-to-wire victory. Paul Costain scored a game-high 20 points for Neumann.
The Viking s( 8-8) host Gateway Charter Thursday night.
