Cape Coral High’s girls’ basketball team closed out its three-game appearance in the Queen of Palms Classic tournament Wednesday morning at Dunbar with a 67-61 victory over Gulf Coast (12-7) to claim seventh place in the Emerald Division bracket.

The win is the first for the Seahawks (7-7) in the QOP following disappointing losses to Haines City (64-48) Tuesday and Vero Beach (60-49) in Monday’s opener.

“It’s always disappointing when you lose a game,” said Seahawks co-coach Kirk Myers. “The good tournament competition, however, gets the girls ready for districts and state playoffs.”

Senior McKenna Beach once again led the Seahawks in scoring with 32 points. She knocked down 35 points against Vero Beach and had 21 against Haines City.

Junior Meka Sillevis pitched in with 15 points for the Seahawks, who led the majority of the first three quarters before Gulf Coast caught up and took a brief lead. The Seahawks reclaimed the lead in the game’s final five minutes.

“It was a team effort at the free throw line in the fourth quarter that earned us the win,” said Myers.

The Seahawks, who have struggled at the stripe this season, converted 14 free throws in the closing period to ice the victory.

The Seahawks return to regular season play on Monday when they host North Fort Myers.

The Seahawks boys’ team (5-9) was playing for fifth place in the Smoothie King Classic Tournament at Bradenton Christian Wednesday afternoon against Sarasota Christian.

Like their classmates, Cape’s boys picked up one win in the three-day tournament heading to Wednesday’s game against the state’s No.2-ranked team in Class 2A.

The Seahawks host Lehigh on Tuesday when they return to regular season play.

Island Coast’s boys played for the championship Wednesday night in the TPS Pine School Classic in Jupiter. The Gators (9-4) met Seminole Ridge in the finale of the three-day tournament.

They got to the title game with two previous victories over Miami-Dade Christian (82-76 in OT) on Monday and host Pine School 90-75 in the semifinals Tuesday.

The Gators return to District 6A-11 action on Monday at Venice.

Area soccer teams, boys and girls, return to the field next week after enjoying a holiday break.

The schedule picks up on Monday with Island Coast, Oasis, Mariner and Ida Baker boys’ all in action.

The girls’ schedule resumes with one game Monday as Island Coast visits Oasis. Mariner, Cape Coral, North Fort Myers and Bishop Verot girls’ teams play games on Tuesday.
