Mariner dealt first setback 63-55

The Mariner Tritons suffered their first defeat of the season Thursday evening at the hands of Cardinal Gibbons 63-55 at Bishop Verot in the City of Palms Classic.

Rodney Hunter powered his way to a team-high 31 points to lead the Tritons. Sean Kostyk added 14 points and five rebounds.

“We were bad at taking care of the basketball in the second quarter,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “We were down by nine after the third quarter and lost by eight.”

Harris said the Tritons made too many live ball turnovers leading to easy baskets for Gibbons, the No. 1 ranked team in Class 5A.

The Tritons (7-1) host DeSoto Saturday in the Tritons Christmas Shootout after Dunbar faces Riverview at 6 p.m.

Island Cost 72, East Lee County 54: Three players scored in double figures Thusday night to lead Island Coast to a double-digit victory over East Lee County.

“We needed the fourth quarter to pull away,” said Gators coach Greg Coleman. “We scored in spurts all night.”

The Gators took charge in the fourth period, scoring 28 points down the stretch to open the margin of victory.

“It was an ugly game against a team that played us extremely hard,” said Coleman. “We didn’t play hard until the fourth quarter.”

Jatt Jeannelas led the Gators with 17 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Gabe Muhammad added 16 points, four assists and nine steals. Charles Ellis contributed 13 points with 10 rebounds.

The Gators (7-4) are idle until an appearance in the Pine School Classic on Dec. 29 against Miami Dade Christian.

Cape Coral 47, Riverdale 37: C.J. Lewis connected for a team-high 25 points Thusday night, including four consecutive free throws in the final minute, to lift Cape Coral to victory at Riverdale

Cape trailed until midway through the fourth quarter, spared by Lewis’ free throw accuracy at the end. Lewis also grabbed six rebounds. Joe Mesaros contributed nine points and four rebounds.

The Seahawks (4-7) travel to Immokalee Friday for a district game.

Girls Soccer

North Fort Myers 8, Lehigh 0: North Fort Myers concluded its District 3A-13 schedule Thursday night by shutting out Lehigh.

Madison Lampkins accounted for four goals and two assists to lead the Red Knights. Megan Richards contributed two goals with Nicole Paquin and Randi Lukas each scoring once. Goalkeeper Jacquie Scrivanich made two saves.

The Knights (14-1, 7-0 district) participate in Mariner’s Tritons Invitational Friday and Saturday.
