Fort Myers rolls past Island Coast

2 min read

Mark Matthews poured in a game-high 32 points Tuesday night to lead Fort Myers to a rout of Island Coast 77-47 on the Gators’ home court.

“We missed 16 free throws, which did not help,” said Gators coach Greg Coleman. “Turnovers weren’t a huge deal, but we could not get any open looks at all. They laid the defense on us pretty good. We could have done a better job of getting open, but didn’t try hard enough.”

The Gators only had one player reach double figures in scoring – Maurice Flournoy with 10 points.

“Gotta give Fort Myers credit for their defense tonight,” added Coleman.

The Gators (6-4) host East Lee County Thursday night.

Two games on the schedule were postponed. One of those, Lely at Mariner, was rescheduled for Jan. 10 due to testing week in Collier County schools. The Tritons, ranked No. 3 in the state in Class 5A, face No. 1 Cardinal Gibbons Thursday night at Bishop Verot in the City of Palms Classic.

DeSoto scored the game-winner later in the second half.
