Mariner pulls away from Golden Gate 67-60
Mariner extended its undefeated start to the boys basketball season Friday night with a 67-60 victory at Golden Gate.
Rodney Hunter pitched in a game-high 26 points to go with nine rebounds to lead the Tritons. Freshman Jahmel Myers chipped in with 22 points and seven rebounds and Logan Schell handed out seven assists.
“The freshmen grew up a lot tonight,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “They thrived in a heated situation. It took a great fourth quarter to win tonight.”
The Tritons led early, but Golden Gate rallied to take a narrow lead in the third quarter. The Tritons answered in the fourth to pull out the victory.
The Tritons (7-0) face Cardinal Gibbons on Thursday in the City of Palms Classic at Bishop Verot.
Port Charlotte 51, Ida Baker 32: The Bulldogs had no answer for the Pirates Friday night, falling by a 19-point margin at the Dog Pound.
Devin Hanley led the Bulldogs with 14 points and 13 rebounds with little help from his teammates. The Bulldogs (1-8) host Lehigh on Tuesday.
Girls Basketball
Oasis 56, Imagine 28: Samantha Wood’s double-double effort Friday night helped Oasis double-up Imagine School on the road.
Jordan Westendorf contributed 12 points to the Sharks’ cause.
“We played a lot of girls tonight,” said Sharks coach Sam Wood. “Ten of our 12 girls scored tonight.”
The Sharks (8-5) host Evangelical Christian on Monday.
Boys Soccer
Cape Coral 7, East Lee County 1: Gianni Cognata had a hat trick and an assist Friday night and a lot of help from teammates in routing East Lee County.
Christian Iturbe added one goal and two assists for the Seahawks. Jeffrey Hunter, Parker Stone and Kevin Villa also accounted for single goals with Xavier Torres, Camillo Avendano and Andre Blanco were credited with assists.
Goalkeeper Kyal Weber had one save and allowed the Jaguars the game’s first goal. The Seahawks answered with seven straight scores.
The Seahawks (11-1-2) play at Bishop Verot next Friday.
Girls Soccer
North Fort Myers 6, Lemon Bay 0: Madison Lampkins and Tori Kowalczyk scored multiple goals Friday night to lead North Fort Myers to a District 3A-13 victory at Lemon Bay.
Lampkins had three goals and one assist. Kowalczyk had two goals and one assist. Nicole Paquin added the other goal and Randi Lukas contributed with one asisst. Goalkeeper Coral Jarvis made three saves to preserve the shutout.
The Red Knights (12-1, 7-0 district), who led 4-0 at the half, take on the Green Wave Monday night at Fort Myers.
