Seahawks, Cougars in scoreless tie

The Cape Coral Seahawks had to settle for a scoreless tie with Barron Collier Monday night, despite the offensive firepower of Gianni Cognata and Jonathan Jimenez.

Cognata and Jimenez combined for nine of the Seahawks’ 12 shots on goal, but without converting a single opportunity.

“It was a very balanced game, very evenly matched,” said Seahawks coach Paolo Acosta.

Collier took about as many shots on goal as the Seahawks, with keeper Kyal Weber making six saves total. The Seahawks (9-1-2) host North Fort Myers Tuesday night.

Bishop Verot 8, Gateway Charter 1: Nathan Powers led Bishop Verot’s offensive eruption Monday night with two goals toward the Vikings’ mauling of Gateway Charter.

Zach Cloutier, Adam Day, James Dwyer, Landon Howell, Austin Olbekson and Nick Petrozzi each contributed one goal to the onsluaght. Keepers Ricardo Martinez and Michael Hafele combined for seven saves.

The Vikings visit LaBelle Tuesday in another district matchup.

Girls Soccer

Island Coast 3, Lehigh 0: Sisters Makenzie Hare and Riley Hare accounted for all the goals Monday night as Island Coast shut out Lehigh.

Mackenzie scored twice and Riley once while Kaitlyn Hood made four saves guarding the net to preserve the victory.

The Gators (4-8) host Lemon Bay Tuesday.

Bishop Verot 4, Gateway Charter 0: Bishop Verot keeps rolling over district opponents, the latest being a shutout of Gateway Charter Monday night.

Olivia Miller led the Vikings with two goals with Tess Malik and Maddie Sarnac also connecting. Kiera Clay assisted on three of the scores with keeper Kinzie Frey needing to make just two saves to preserve the shutout.

The Vikings (8-4-2, 7-0 district) host LaBelle in another district matchup on Tuesday.

Girls Basketball

Island Coast 55, Mariner 26: Island Coast got double-figure scoring from three different players Monday night to pound Mariner into submission.

Cherelle Washington led the Gators with 21 points. Senior Leann Ellis pitched in 15 points and wound up with seven steals. Jen Fasano added 13 points.

Mariah Ortiz again led the Tritons with nine points. Katie Caric scored eight and Brooke Junkins four.

Both teams play Tuesday. Mariner (6-5) travels to Immokalee while Island Coast (6-4) hosts North Fort Myers.
