NFM girls shut out Tritons 2-0

3 min read

One goal in each half was all North Fort Myers needed to record a 2-0 victory District 3A-13 Friday night at Mariner.

Madison Lampkins scored the eventual game-winner in the first half off an assist from Amanda Disilva. Taylor Kruse’s unassisted goal in the second half added insurance for the Red Knights.

“Taylor’s goal was the play of the game,” said Red Knights coach Nick Erickson. “She beat three defenders from 45 yards out with three or four minutes to go. The game was not pretty until the final 20 minutes or so when we started to work for scoring opportunities.”

Goalkeeper Coral Jarvis made about four saves to preserve the win for the Knights (10-1, 5-0 district), who host Cape Coral on Tuesday.

Venice 61, Island Coast 59: A slow start put Island Coast in a deep hole (15-6) after the first quarter only to rally before eventually falling at home to Venice Friday night.

“Four players in double figures and we still lose,” lamented Gators coach Greg Coleman. “Turnovers and our inability to hit free throws in the fourth quarter really hurt us.”

The Gators fought back from a 24-21 halftime deficit to take a five-point lead with three minutes to play, but that’s when the turnovers and free throws came into play.

Venice converted 12-of-21 free throws in the fourth quarter, accounting for half of the Indians’ 24 total fourth-quarter points. The Gators managed just 3-of-7 free throws in the final period.

Kory Curtin led the Gators with 15 points, Matt Jeannelas chipped in with 13 points, five rebounds and three steals. Craig Sirmons added 10 points and 12 rebounds with Sam Merchant contributing 11 points.

“We were atrocious at the free throw line,” said Coleman.

The Gators hit just 6-of-15 for the game at the line.

Island Coast (3-3, 1-1 district) hosts North Fort Myers on Tuesday.

Lely 63, Bishop Verot 54: Matt Medovich pitched in a game-high 21 points to go with 12 rebounds, but the highlight was not enough to carry Bishop Verot to victory Friday night at Lely.

Stephen Wagner added 10 points for the Vikings.

Lik Estilien topped Lely with 19 points and Zach Gober had 18.

The Vikings (3-3) host Community School of Naples on Tuesday.
