Gulf Coast ends North’s win streak
North Fort Myers’ girls’ soccer team had their undefeated season come to a screeching halt Monday night with a 5-4 loss to Gulf Coast at Moody Field.
The Sharks claimed a 2-0 lead off a free kick and a carom off the post before North got on the board before halftime.
Two quick goals by the Sharks in the second half boosted the lead to 4-1 and put the Red Knights in comeback mode. The Knights scored the next two goals to trim the margin to 4-3.
That’s when the Sharks scored the game-winner with nine minutes remaining. The Knights countered with their final goal less than two minutes later, but were unable to score the equalizer.
Madison Lampkins accounted for two goals and two assists with Randi Lukas tacking on the other two goals for the Knights (8-1), who hosted South Fort Myers Tuesday night.
Girls Basketball
Mariner 49, Lely 42: Mariah Ortiz continues to lead the scoring for Mariner, pitching in 21 points Monday night to help beat Lely.
Kiera Bateman contributed eight points for the Tritons (6-2), who hosted Cypress Lake Tuesday night.
Oasis 43, Moore Haven 5: Oasis used a tight defense and a team effort to beat Moore Haven Tuesday night.
“It was a great team effort tonight and great defense,” said Sharks coach Sam Wood. “We held a team that was averaging 40 points a game to just five points.”
Samantha Wood led all scorers with 22 points, including six three-point baskets. Jordan Westendorf had the second-highest point total with six.
The Sharks (6-2) played at Immokalee Tuesday.
Mariner 64, Port Charlotte 48: Senior Mariah Ortiz enjoyed a career-best offensive night Friday in the Bokamper’s Thanksgiving Tournament at Barron Collier.
Ortiz knocked down 42 points, including five three-point baskets, as she single-handedly put the game out of reach by scoring 19 of her game-high total in the fourth quarter.
Grace Waller added five points and Katie Adams scored five in addition to another dependable defensive effort.
The Tritons (4-2) lost to C.S. Naples 80-29 in the first round of the tournament.
Mariner 55, Evangelical Christian 49: Mariah Ortiz pumped in a game-high 26 points Saturday to lead Mariner to victory over Evangelical Christian in the Bokamper’s Thanksgiving Tournament at Barron Collier.
Freshman Kristen Powell contributed eight points that included several key free throws at the end to preserve the victory.
Boys Basketball
Moore Haven 65, Oasis 62: A pair of Sharks turned in double-double performances Monday night, but Oasis still came up short at home against Moore Haven.
Owen Roos led the Sharks with 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Nick Lyons added 14 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Brooks Pratt got in on the double-figure scoring with 12 points and five rebounds.
The teams traded the lead most of the first three quarters and Oasis wound up trailing by three as time wound down to the final seconds. The Sharks had a chance to tie the game with five seconds remaining, but turned the ball over setting up for a three-point shot.
The Sharks (0-5) went looking for their first win of the season Tuesday at C.S. Naples.
