Island Coast wins season opener 70-45
Craig Sirmons set a new school record for rebounds in a single game Monday night with a double-double performance of 20 points and 24 rebounds to lead Island Coast to a 70-45 victory over Evangelical Christian.
Sirmons’ effort came in the Gators’ regular-season opening game. Sam Merchant pitched in with 18 points and Zach McAloon added 10 points and nine rebounds. Gabe Muhammad handed out eight assists to go with six points.
The Gators (1-0) go up against Gulf Coast Wednesday night on the first day of Island Coast’s Turkey Shootout. The shootout continues Friday and Saturday with Mariner and Cape Coral also participating.
Dunbar 50, Ida Baker 34: Baker slipped to 3-0 on the season Monday night in a loss at Dunbar.
Derrick Loza led the Bulldogs with 18 points. Descota Hillard added 10 points and Devin Hanley grabbed six rebounds.
The Bulldogs are idle until Dec. 2 when they host Island Coast.
Girls Basketball
Oasis 49, SWF Christian 46: Samantha Wood connected on three of her six three-point baskets in the fourth quarter to spark Oasis to a come-from-behind victory Monday night.
SWFC led by seven points in the fourth quarter when Wood and the Sharks mounted their comeback. Wood finished the game with 24 points, four assists and four steals. Jordan Westendorf added 12 points and 11 rebounds.
“We hit key shots at the end and applied a bit of pressure to come back,” said Sharks coach Sam Wood. “We also played good defense down the stretch.”
The Sharks (4-2) host Ida Baker Tuesday.\
Boys Soccer
Cape Coral 1, Fort Myers 0: One goal by Gianni Cognata was all Cape Coral needed Monday night as goalkeeper Kyal Weber made six saves to preserve the Seahawks’ shutout victory.
Cognata’s goal came about 10 minutes before halftime. His first shot caromed off the keeper allowing him to finish the play with a second chance.
The Seahawks (6-1-1) are idle until Dec. 2 when they visit Ida Baker.
Bishop Verot 6, First Baptist 0: Weston Cole knocked home three goals Monday night to lead Bishop Verot’s victory over First Baptist.
James Dwyer, Landon Howell and Adam Day each contributed one goal. Goalkeeper Ricardo Martinez only had to make one save to preserve the shutout.
The Vikings travel to Immokalee Tuesday.
