Mariner crushes Baker in season opener

Rodney Hunter and Sean Kostyk led the Mariner Tritons to a season-opening 73-41 victory Thursday night at Ida Baker.

Hunter pitched in 17 points to share game scoring honors with Baker’s Derrick Loaza. Kostyk added 14 and Jahmel Myers added 12 for the Tritons.

“We did a good job of pushing the tempo early,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “We hit three of our seven three-pointers in the first period.”

The Tritons started on an 18-0 run to put the game out of reach early and led 28-6 after one quarter.

Logan Schell added six points and Qwamek Shields had five for the Tritons (1-0), who host Riverdale on Tuesday at noon before the student body.

Ronny Calderon pulled down three rebounds in the Bulldogs’ losing effort.

The Bulldogs (0-2) visit Dunbar on Monday.

Girls Basketball

Mariner 73, Ida Baker 41: Sophomore Kierra Bateman pitched in a game-high 20 points, including three three-point goals in the first quarter, to spark Mariner to a lopsided victory Thursday at Baker.

Senior Mariah Ortiz contributed 15 points and Grace Waller 10 for the Tritons (2-1), who visit Riverdale on Tuesday.

Oasis 34, LaBelle 27: Jordan Westendorf scored a game-high 16 points in leading Oasis past LaBelle Thursday night in a district matchup.

Kelsie Arentsen contributed eight rebounds to the cause as the Sharks led throughout by five to nine points. The Sharks (3-2, 2-0 district) travel to Southwest Florida Christian on Monday.

Girls Soccer

Bishop Verot 6, Gateway 0: Lauren Lockard drilled three goals and Elaina Quinonez tacked on two more to lead Bishop Verot to victory Thursday night.

Kerry Waldron had the other goal for the Vikings and Kiera Clay contributed three assists. Verot’s goalkeepers did not make a single save in preserving the shutout.

The Vikings (5-3) play Friday at Gulf Coast.
