Ortiz scores 21 but Mariner falls to Charlotte
Maria Ortiz pumped in a team-high 21 points, including five three-point goals, to lead Mariner in its season-opening loss at Charlotte Tuesday night 44-33.

Bishop Verot 55, St. John Neumann 50: Elle Thomas connected for a game-high 23 points Tuesday night as Bishop Verot opened the season with a road victory at St. John Neumann.
Caroline Snell pitched in with 15 points for the Vikings. Ashley Holleran pulled down 14 rebounds.
“It was a huge effort,” said Vikings coach Mark Kramer. “We were down six at the half and dominated the second half. Our defense stepped up in the second half and we outscored them in the fourth quarter by 10 points.”
The Vikings (1-0) play at Estero on Wednesday.
