The USA Winter Nationals of senior softball got under way on Wednesday at three sports complexes in Lee County. The five-day, 140-team tournament runs through Monday.
Cape Coral is hosting games at Northwest Sports Complex and Cape Coral Sports Complex in addition to the CenturyLink Sports Complex in Fort Myers and North Collier Regional Park in Collier County
Last year’s tournament generated an economic impact of $3.1 million to the area according to the Lee County Sports Development office.
“We’re honored to host Senior Softball-USA in Lee County again,” said sports development executive director Jeff Mielke said. “This first-class tournament is one of our most prestigious annual events, and Senior Softball USA is one of the best organizations we partner with.”
The five county-owned baseball complexes host more than 200 days of amateur baseball tournaments each year when they aren’t being used for spring training games. The estimated economic impact of all of these events is $50 million annually.
