Sharks top Vikings
On a mission, Oasis completed its goal of winning the school’s first district volleyball championship Thursday night with a 25-19, 19-25, 25-19, 25-15 triumph over top-seeded Bishop Verot at Oasis.
The Sharks (19-8) hosted Clewiston Tuesday night in the Region 4A-3 quarterfinal playoffs while Verot (19-4) traveled to Lincoln Park for its quarterfinal match.
“This is huge,” said Sharks coach James Miko-lajczyk. “We have never won a district championship. For us to pull out a victory before the fans that support us. We made our goal a reality tonight which means so much to me.”
The Sharks claimed the District 4A-11 title behind the double-double effort of senior Larra Bickelhaupt with 12 kills, 13 digs and one service ace. Vanessa Robbins contributed six kills, nine digs and one ace while Sam Bebber came through with 10 digs, five kills and three aces. Tiffany Schram handed out 24 key assists to go with five blocks and three aces.
“We locked up a home match for the playoffs,” said Mikolajczyk. “We are excited, but not satisfied.”
Verot (19-4) knew they were in for a tough match.
“I’m not really surprised with the result,” said Vikings coach Jeremy Ridgeo. “They are senior heavy and we are so young and it showed tonight.”
Alyssa Collins and Margo Fry led the Vikings with 12 kills apiece while Taya Leonard added nine kills and 19 assists.
