Island Coast can finish off an undefeated District 5A-14 schedule tonight with a victory over surging Dunbar, but the Gators (7-1, 5-0 district) will have to do that in hostile territory at Dunbar (3-4, 3-1).

The Gators and Tigers were the district’s champion and runner-up, respectively, last season, too. The Tigers are coming off a big upset victory over Cape Coral last week that knocked the Seahawks into third place in the district standings.

“We’ve got to stop their big receiver using our whole defense,” said Gators coach Wayne Blair. “We have to wrap up and make tackles and create turnovers.

“We have senior-laden team trying to accomplish some history with back-to-back district titles,” added Blair. “It’s ironic, too, that these teams were 1-2 last year and (former Gators coach) Joe Bowen is now working over there.”

Cape Coral (6-2, 3-2) visits non-district rival Lehigh tonight and needs the Tigers to lose both of their remaining district games to have a chance at the district runner-up spot. Oh, the Seahawks also must take care of business next week in their annual Black-and-Blue Bowl rival game against Mariner (0-8, 0-4).

“We have to control our own destiny and not rely on anyone for help,” said Seahawks coach Larry Gary. “We are focused on Lehigh and Mariner next week.”

Ida Baker (4-4, 1-1), second in District 6A-12 to South Fort Myers, visits non-district Charlotte tonight before its final district matchup next week against East Lee County (0-7, 0-2).

In other area games tonight Mariner hosts Cypress Lake (2-5, 0-4) in what amounts to the Tritons’ final chance at posting a victory this season; North Fort Myers (3-4, 2-2) hosts Lemon Bay (4-3, 2-2); Bishop Verot (4-3, 1-0) travels to Lake Placid; and unbeaten Fort Myers (7-0, 2-0) invades Estero (1-6, 0-3).
