Cape falls to Golden Gate
Golden Gate knocked off Cape Coral Tuesday night in the semifinal round of the District 5A-12 Tournament at Cypress Lake, advancing to Thursday’s championship match.
The Seahawks (12-10) took the match to the five-game limit winning the first and fourth games, but coming up short of their goal 21-25, 25-22, 25-10, 23-25, 15-8. Senior Carly Vilardi solidified the defense with 14 digs while Chelsea Thomas served up 18 total points and Danielle Smith handed out 29 assists. Katie Hanley contributed five blocks for the Seahawks.
“We had too many hitting errors and were not on point,” said Seahawks coach Justin Altman. “We couldn’t put the ball down when we needed to.”
The Seahawks, who were last in the district last year, improved to third this season.
District 6A-11: Top-seeded Venice was too much for fourth-seed Ida Baker Tuesday night in the semifinal round. The Vikings prevailed in straight sets 25-5, 25-16, 25-10.
The only highlights for the Bulldogs (14-9) were Ashley Vargas with 10 blocks, three digs, two kills and one service ace. Kristina Kayatta contributed three kills, two blocks and five digs while Amanda Gross added five assists, five digs and one ace.
Venice hosts the winner between North Fort Myers and Port Charlotte Thursday night in the championship match.
District 4A-11: Second-seeded Oasis goes against third-seed LaBelle at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the semifinal round with top-seed Bishop Verot facing No. 4 Gateway Charter at 8. Gateway eliminated Dunbar in straight sets at Oasis Tuesday night 25-19, 25-20, 25-19.
Wednesday’s winners play in the championship game Thursday at Oasis.
Boys Golf
Region 2A-7: Ida Baker’s Ross Lally shot a 3-under-par 69 Tuesday at Port Charlotte Golf Club to claim his second regional golf championship.
“I’m thrilled for Ross,” said Baker coach Scott Conforte. “We had two good scores and the same story as all season our three and four couldn’t close the deal.”
Alec DiLallo scored 76 for the Bulldogs, who earned a fifth-place finish with a team total of 326. Naples won the team title with 307, followed by Barron Collier (312), Port Charlotte (314), and Estero (322).
Led by Chris Spoone’s low round of 79, Mariner placed just behind Baker in sixth place with a team total of 337.
Lally advances to the FHSAA State Tournament on Nov. 2-4 at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills.

Bowling
At Coral Lanes: Mariner swept Tuesday’s season-ending match with Cape Coral. The Triton girls prevailed 4 1/2 to 1/2 while the boys won 3-2.
Mia Raymond led the Seahawks (7-5) with a high game of 187 toward the total pinfall of 648 while Alyx Parkinson rolled 191 to lead the boys’ losing effort toward a pinfall of 872.
Attention turns to the District 6 Tournament next Tuesday at Coral Lanes with the FHSAA State Finals looming on Nov. 5-6 in Orlando.

Ida Baker swept Island Coast out of the District 6A-11 volleyball tournament Monday night in the first round, advancing to the semifinals on Tuesday at top-seeded Venice.
The Bulldogs (14-8) rode Amanda Gross’ triple-double of 10 kills, 12 assists and 11 digs to a 25-16, 25-18, 25-18 victory on their home floor. Kristina Kayatta added eight kills, 12 assists, five digs and one block to the cause with Devon Ramey contributing six kills, 14 digs and two service aces.
The other District 6A-11 semifinal match Tuesday pits Port Charlotte against No. 2 seed North Fort Myers.
The winners collide in the championship match on Thursday.
District 5A-12: After a slow start, Mariner took it to Golden Gate Monday in the first round of district play only to come up short 25-9, 19-25, 25-21, 25-13.
The loss eliminates the Tritons and sends Golden Gate into the semifinal round Tuesday against Cape Coral at Cypress Lake. The other semifinal has Lely taking on Immokalee, which advanced with by beating Cypress Lake Monday 26-24, 25-12, 18-25, 25-23.
The winners square off in the championship match Thursday at Cypress Lake.
