FGCU women’s schedule unveiled

1 min read

FGCU just released its women’s basketball season schedule, highlighted by 10 opponents that made the postseason a year ago.

The 29-game slate includes 15 nonconference matchups and 14 Atlantic Sun Conference games with 13 games to be played at Alico Arena.

“We play a very competitive nonconference schedule this season,” said Eagles coach Karl Smesko. “We feel that it will prepare us well for our conference season.”

As the reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Champions, the Eagles face a litany of strong competition this season. Three of the team’s challengers appeared in the 2014 NCAA Tournament, while seven others competed in the WNIT. In addition to the postseason experience, eight teams finished last year ranked among the top-100 in the NCAA RPI.

The 2014-15 season opens on Friday, Nov. 14, when the Eagles welcome George Washington to Alico Arena for a 7 p.m. tipoff. The opening-day bout represents the second-ever meeting between the two teams. The Eagles defeated the Colonials 97-94 in a double-overtime tilt at Alico Arena in the 2009 WNIT.

The Eagles will participate in the Paradise Jam Reed Tournament in the Virgin Islands over the Thanksgiving holiday, facing Wichita State, Clemson and Ohio State.
