McCoy sparks Seahawks 42-0
Keashawn McCoy’s return to the Cape Coral Seahawks paid off right away Friday night. McCoy put up two quick touchdowns to set the tone for Cape’s 42-0 District 5A-14 win at Cypress Lake.
McCoy’s 14-yard scoring catch from Dylan Bontrager was followed a couple of plays later by an 80-yard interception return. The Seahawks were up 14-0 in the first quarter and never looked back.
An altercation near the end of the team’s spring game in May caused McCoy, a junior, to miss the first three games of the season.
“I was glad to get him back,” Seahawks coach Larry Gary said. “You can see why we’re glad to have him back. He’s a player.”
The Seahawks (4-0, 1-0) opened a stretch of five consecutive district games with the victory.
“These next few weeks will tell,” Gary said, “where we really stand.”
It is the second consecutive loss for the Panthers (2-2, 0-1) under first-year coach Xavier McCray.
“We’ve got to be a little bit more disciplined,” McCray said. “We’ve to to work hard on having the ball under control to win games. We can’t be in a game and then lose it all with one big play. We’ve got to bounce back from it.”
Bontrager threw two touchdown passes and ran for another for Cape. He hit C.J. Lewis on a 24-yard pass to open a 21-0 lead in the second quarter.
In all Cape intercepted Panthers quarterback Kyndall Douglas three times, including McCoy’s pickoff and TD return.
A Cypress fumble set up senior Rasheen Bailey’s 18-yard touchdown run that led to a 35-0 Cape lead and a running clock in the third quarter.
“I’m not sure how many turnovers we had, but we had quite a few,” Gary said.
Bailey also scored on a 55-yard pass from Elliot Pierce in the fourth period.
Pierce and third-string quarterback Jacob Stover both got playing time in the late stages of the game.
“It’s always good to get a win,” Gary said. “Cypress is a scrappy team. They really are scrappy. We saw that from them against Fort Myers.”
Cypress has a week off before traveling to North Fort Myers on Oct. 2 for a district game.
“We’ll be back,” McCray said. “We’ll work hard.”
