Mariner Tritons coach James Hale has resigned as football coach and physical education teacher, and is retiring from public education due to family situations effective immediately.

In an email release, athletic director Vito Mennona announced that assistant coach Travis Smith has been promoted to replace Hale. Smith graduated from Mariner in 1994 and played on championship teams while there. He served the school as an assistant coach and science teacher since 2011.

Smith is a veteran of local high school football who was on the coaching staff of a championship football program at South Fort Myers from 2010-11 before becoming the Tritons’ offensive coordinator.

Hale will return to his hometown at the end of this school year.
