FGCU clips Belmont 5-4
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Facing a 3-0 first inning deficit, the FGCU Eagles rallied over the middle innings, highlighted by a three-run seventh, to defeat Belmont 5-4 Friday in the first game of the critical Atlantic Sun Conference series.
With two singles in the game, senior Mikel Alvarez tied the FGCU career hits record at 311.
Battling for a conference tournament berth, the Eagles improved to 23-27 overall and brought their league record to 12-13.
The Eagles scored five runs on 10 hits, highlighted Alvarez’s 2-for-3 night that included three RBI, a run scored and an intentional walk. His second hit in the game gave him a share of the career hits record.
Freshman Sean Dwyer was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and junior Javi Sujo went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Senior right-hander Austin Gaines went four innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts in a no-decision. Improving to 3-0, sophomore lefty R.J. Brown earned the win in relief.
The A-Sun weekend series continues Saturday at 5 p.m.
