Mets hand Miracle 11-2 loss
PORT ST. LUCIE – New York Mets outfielder Jason Bay hit a pair of two-run home runs in a rehab appearance providing the majority of the damage in St. Lucie’s 11-2 victory over the Fort Myers Miracle Tuesday night.
The Miracle took a 1-0 lead in the first as Aaron Hicks led the game off with a triple off Mets starter Scott Moviel, and scored on a sac-fly by James Beresford.
After a fielding error by Beresford in the bottom of the first, Bay connected on his first home run, a towering shot to left-center against Miracle starter Ryan Mullins.
Chris Herrmann led off the second with his team-leading fourth double of the season, and later scored to tie the game at 2-2 on a sac-fly by Anderson Hidalgo.
The Mets quickly retook the lead in the third as Wilmer Flores doubled and eventually scored on a single by Francisco Pena.
Matt Den Dekker got on with a bunt single in front of Bay’s second home run, Mullins (0-1), who allowed five runs (four earned) in three innings of work, took the loss in his first start of the season.
Bay added singles in the fifth and eighth innings to finish the night 4-for-4. He also drew a sixth inning walk.
Fort Myers went cold offensively the rest of the night, with Moviel (2-0) lasting 6 2/3 innings for his second win of the year.
The Miracle pitching staff gave up a season-high in hits (18) and runs (11).
The Miracle (7-6) finished the six-game road trip 3-3, taking 2-of-3 from Bradenton and dropping 2-of-3 to first-place St. Lucie (11-2).
The Miracle return to Hammond Stadium Wednesday to face the Marauders.
