Prep Report: Verot girls dump Cape 8-1
Bishop Verot put together one big inning that proved to be enough to carry the Vikings to an 8-1 victory Wednesday night over the Cape Coral Seahawks.
“Bishop Verot is a very good hitting team,” said Seahawks coach Amy Petruska. “We struggled to get hits and to make some key plays, especially in that third inning.”
The Vikings broke the game open with a six-run rally in the third to take a 7-0 lead when the dust settled. The first eight batters reached base on consecutive hits.
With the bases loaded and no outs, Lauren Blasingim (3-for-5) drove in two runs with a single to spark the rally, and added another RBI single in the fourth.
Talia Barraco’s two-run double and Emma Clinger’s two-run single finished off the six-run outburst. The Vikings could have scored more runs in the inning, but two baserunners were put out trying to take an extra base.
The Seahawks answered with a run in the bottom of the third, their only run of the game. Kristi Maselter doubled deep down the left field line with one out. Two batters later she scored on Amanda Hurley’s single through the shortstop hole to left.
In the fourth, Verot’s Jordan Honc (4-for-5) reached on a two-out double off the second baseman’s glove and scored on Blasingim’s third hit of the night.
Paris Prusak contributed three hits and Emma Clinger two hits toward the Vikings’ 15-hit total.
Cape’s Brenna Harkins (7-13) took the loss. She gave up eight runs on 15 hits with only two strikeouts. The first of the eight runs scored on a wild pitch.
Barraco earned the win for the Vikings (14-4) by scattering five hits while walking two and striking out two.

Gellinger sparked a three-run rally in the fourth inning during which the Gators took advantage of four defensive errors.
The Gators added three runs in the seventh to pad the final margin. A couple of stolen bases, a squeeze bunt, a sacrifice, a fielder’s choice and a wild pitch accounted for the final runs.
