Behind a 18-hit day, Florida International topped FGCU 3-2 and 4-1 in a softball doubleheader Wednesday at the FGCU softball Complex.

The losses snap a four-game winning streak for FGCU (19-19).

FIU (19-15) had five nicely placed singles to score three in the top of the third inning. Jessy Alfonso and Beth Peller had back-to-back singles to the right side and left field, respectively.

Ashley McClain loaded the bases on an FIU miscue. Another set of singles scored two runs before the final run scored on a single through the left side.

With the bases loaded and one out, redshirt senior pitcher Catherine McDaniel got out of the jam on consecutive fly outs.

In the second game, FIU scored a run in four different innings on nine hits. The Eagles had one run on seven hits, but left a total of 12 runners stranded.

FGCU got on the board in the last inning after back-to-back singles by freshman Tori Williams and sophomore Mariah Fernandez. On the next batter, an overthrow to third base allowed Williams to score and Fernandez advanced to third.

The Eagles turn their attention to conference play starting Saturday in Georgia with doubleheaders against A-Sun foes Mercer and Kennesaw State. The Eagles play Mercer at 2 p.m. before heading north to face the Owls at 1 p.m. Sunday.
