Prep Report: Seahawks scuttle win streak 14-2

7 min read

Almost nothing went right for the Cape Coral Seahawks Tuesday night in the 14-2 home field loss to District 4A-11 rival Estero.

The Seahawks (7-2) committed eight errors in the game, six of them coming in the final three innings to assist the Wildcats (9-0) in putting up 11 runs to turn the game into a rout.

Oh, and the Seahawks’ seven-game winning streak came to an end.

Twice in the game – in the second and sixth innings – the Wildcats scored two runs without the benefit of a base hit.

“We just want to forget this one and move on,” said Seahawks coach Mike Gorton. “We’ve got a big game coming up against Riverdale, and it’s a district game.”

The loss hurts because it was a district game. The Seahawks travel to Riverdale (7-2) on Friday.

With one out, three straight Wildcats got base hits in the first inning. The second of those, a double by Will Anderson (3-for-5), drove in the first run. Then, with the bases loaded, Cape left-hander Derek Pandolfi (1-1), struck out the next two hitters to pitch out of the jam.

Pandolfi pitched with runners on base all night long, reaching on one of the Wildcats’ 14 base hits, four walks or the errors. Pandolfi lasted 4 2/3 innings, surrendering eight runs on seven hits, walked four, hit a batter and struck out six.

The Wildcats led 3-0 entering the fifth inning. That’s when they struck for five runs on three hits bracketed around a fielder’s choice, a hit batsman and an error. Senior right-hander Stefan Groening relieved Pandolfi and struck out his first batter to quell the rally.

“Our pitchers threw the ball well,” said Gorton. “Not all of this was their fault.”

The Wildcats made it 10-0 in the sixth inning, scoring twice as back-to-back-to-back batters reached base safely on Cape infield errors. One run scored on a fielder’s choice play at the plate and the second on a groundout.

The Seahawks finally threatened in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to back-to-back walks to the first two batters. A single by Brett Hobaugh plated Brandon Marshall with the first run. With one out, Danny Hale hit a high chopper between the mound and first base on which Dean Morales, pinch-running for Koji Spangler, scored the second run to send the game to the seventh inning.

The Wildcats answered by sending 10 batters to the plate to score four runs on six hits and two more Seahawk errors thrown in.

Brad Kopale, Koji Spangler and Luke Spangler each had two hits for the Seahawks.
