Prep Report: Tritons claw past Seahawks 7-2
The Mariner Tritons put together three two-run rallies in the first four innings to gain the advantage while sophomore pitcher Alyssa Langdale kept Cape Coral hitters off balance Tuesday in the Tritons’ 7-2 victory.
Langdale, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, struck out 10 Seahawks to record her first win on the mound.
“She (Langdale) has not pitched this long,” said Tritons coach Donna Coleman. “I usually split her (innings), but she is only going to get stronger.”
Langdale had a no-hitter going until the sixth inning when Kristi Maselter got a bloop single to right field with one out. Amanda Hurley then slugged a two-run home run to put the Seahawks on the board.
“We struggled at the plate,” said Seahawks coach Amy Petruska. “It’s hard to win when you don’t get hits. Amanda made adjustments and hit the home run when we needed it. That’s what it’s about, making in-game adjustments.”
Seahawks pitcher Brenna Harkins (1-2) surrendered 11 base hits, walked two and struck out one.
Samantha Rapp drove in the Tritons’ first run with a sacrifice-fly to right with two runners on. Sam Greenwell’s two-out double in the first inning delivered the second run.
Brittany Jarvis singled to drive in two runs in the second inning. Jarvis was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.
The Tritons added two more runs in the fourth. Carrie Grigiski scored the first run from third on a delayed double steal with Langdale drawing a throw to second base. Langdale later scored from third on a wild pickoff throw.
Abby Willis, who singled to lead off the fifth, was standing on third base after two goundouts. Katherine Santiago, pinch-hitting for Jarvis, singled to drive Willis home with the final run.
“We hit the ball well,” said Coleman. “(Cape) made some good plays on some hard-hit balls. We have a good-hitting lineup from top to bottom.”
The Seahawks (1-2) are back in action Wednesday at Naples. The Tritons (2-1) host Fort Myers Thursday.
