Cape boys’ soccer final on the road
Cape Coral High School athletic director Ashley Woolbright-Thompson got a surprising phone call from the FHSAA Friday morning about the boys’ Region 4A-3 Final soccer game the Seahawks were preparing to host at 7 p.m. at Dave Warkentin Field.
“They informed us that they made a mistake in which team is supposed to host (Friday’s) game,” Woolbright-Thompson wrote in an e-mail.
The game now is to be played at 7 p.m. Saturday at Lakewood Ranch.
Both Lakewood Ranch and Cape were district runners-up, but Lakewood Ranch did not play a home game in the first two regional rounds while the Seahawks hosted the regional semifinal Tuesday night.
Region 3A-3 Final: James Gibson headed a ball sent his way by Andrew Palumbo into the net to give Bishop Verot a 1-0 double-overtime victory over Tampa Berkeley Prep Friday night.
Gibson’s goal came with about 30 seconds to go before the game would have gone to penalty kick shootout.
Matt Vicili and Tyler Myers, both Cape Coral residents, played outstanding defense in front of goalkeeper Brandon Doyle, who finished with 12 saves.
The Vikings (22-3) advance to the Class 3A state semifinals next week.
