North Fort Myers broke a long-running streak of district basketball tournament defeat by conquering Estero 61-40 Monday night in the first round of District 4A-11 play at Fort Myers High.

“It’s our first district tournament win in about 10 years,” said Red Knights coach Mack Mitchell.

The win sends No. 7 seeded North Fort Myers to the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday against No. 2 seed Mariner.

In the other opening-round game Monday, Riverdale eliminated South Fort Myers 49-41. No. 8 seed Riverdale advances to the quarterfinals to face No. 1 seed Fort Myers at 7 p.m. Tuesday. That game follows the first quarterfinal game pitting No. 4 Ida Baker against No. 5 Cape Coral at 5 p.m.

The quarterfinals resume at 5 p.m. Wednesday as No. 3 Cypress Lake faces No. 6 Lemon Bay.

The Cape Coral Seahawks try to take the next step in the Class 4A regional playoffs Tuesday when they face the Golden Gate Titans at Dave Warkentin Field.

The Titans, like the Seahawks, were unbeaten during the regular season until they got to the district championship game. In the regional quarterfinals last week, the Seahawks (21-1-3) defeated Naples, the team that ended the Titans’ unbeaten streak.

Likewise, the Titans (21-1-3) took out the Fort Myers Green Wave, who ended the Seahawks’ streak.

Tuesday’s winner advances to the regional finals against the winner between Lakewood Ranch or George Steinbrenner.
