Seahawks dominate in 36-0 win
NAPLES – New Cape Coral football coach Brad Matheny got his first taste of what it will be like leading the program after the Seahawks dominated the Golden Gate Titans 36-0 in Friday’s spring football classic.
“I’m excited,” said Matheny. “It’s not every year you get to come in and lead a team that was 9-1 and 10-0 the last two seasons.”
Matheny has some big shoes to fill after former coach Mike Goebbel resigned for medical reasons.
Fortunately for Matheny, those shoes won’t be too hard to fill given the quality of the athletes he inherited.
“We have quite a few good kids this year. It’s not going to be the Spencer Boyd, Jeremy Davis show like years past,” Matheny said of the former stars that have moved on to the College ranks. “The ball is going to get spread around more.”
Based on Friday’s performance at Golden Gate, senior quarterback Brian Greenwell and wideout Prince Holloway are the two rising stars on offense.
Greenwell passed for all four of Cape’s touchdowns, two of those going to Holloway.
The real story was the Seahawks’ defense, which dominated all night, holding the Titans to less than 100 yards of total offense.
“Our defense is definitely going to be the strength of our team,” said Matheny. “They are very aggressive. We have 11 guys who can flat run and they will get after the ball That is where we will hang our hat.”
So impressive were the Seahawks that the only negative Matheny could find was some players didn’t get a chance to shine.
“There are some other guys who can make plays, it just happened to be Prince’s night and Greenwell threw a lot of good balls.”
Cape’s regular season doesn’t officially get started until August, but Matheny warned his players to keep working hard in the offseason and focus on keeping their grades in good standing, to be ready for the fall season.
