Eagles split pair with Dolphins
JACKSONVILLE – After securing a third A-Sun Championship with a 10-4 win on Friday, the FGCU baseball team finished the three-game series with Jacksonville with a double-header split Saturday. The Eagles dropped game one 8-4, but earned a victory in game two 8-3 to take the series from the Dolphins.
The Eagles moved to 34-17 overall (22-5 A-Sun) while the Dolphins slipped to 23-25 (12-11 A-Sun). The Eagles’ record in A-Sun conference play is now 70-20 all-time.
Junior Richie Erath was handed the game ball to start the first contest of the afternoon. The right hander moved to 6-3 on the year after throwing 5 1/3 innings and allowing eight runs (five earned) on 13 hits, to go with six strikeouts and two walks in the loss. Junior righty Craig Crumblypitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief and recorded two strikeouts and two walks.
Matt Tomshaw (7-1) picked up the win for the Dolphins after throwing a complete game and allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits and five strikeouts to go with two walks.
Senior Pete Woodworth was on the mound to begin the second game. Improving his record to 8-1, the righty went seven innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks in the winning effort. Redshirt sophomore Patrick Nathanson threw two innings in relief and allowed just two hits in the scoreless performance.
Next for the Eagles is a meeting with the No. 5 Miami Hurricanes in Coral Gables Tuesday. They lostl to then-No. 13 Miami 9-0 in the “Battle of the Birds” at Hammond Stadium in front of a loud and boisterous crowd of 3,627 on April 14th in Fort Myers.
