Prep Report: Baker hosts boys’ soccer tourney

3 min read

It’s a busy holiday season for high school soccer and basketball tournaments.

The Ida Baker boys kick off the festivities Saturday morning with a one-day, four-team soccer invitational that includes Mariner, Cypress Lake and Estero along with the host Bulldogs.

Six total matches are on tap with each team playing the other three. The first match kicks off at 9 a.m. with the Bulldogs playing Cypress Lake.

As many as seven college coaches have confirmed their attendance, according to Bulldogs coach Mick Whitewood.

“Next year I hope to turn it into a big college showcase with more teams,” he said.

Baker enters the tournament with a 5-2-3 record overall and 3-0-3 in District 4A-11. The Bulldogs earned their first-ever victory over rival Mariner earlier this season, but the rivals square off again in Saturday’s final match at 4:30 p.m.

The other matches are: Mariner vs. Estero at 10 a.m., Baker vs. Estero at noon, Cypress Lake vs. Mariner at 1:30 p.m., and Estero vs. Cypress Lake at 3 p.m.

Each game consists of two 30-minute halves with a 10-minute halftime. Head-to-head and goal differential tiebreakers determine first and second place.

The event includes performances by Baker’s Latin Rhythm Team and a penalty kick competition for prizes.

Saturday’s tournament is the first of several on the upcoming slate.
