FGCU team extends reach to community
The FGCU women’s soccer team delivered their collection of non-perishable food items last week to Interfaith Caregivers of South Lee, which is part of the Estero/San Carlos United Way House. The building not only houses the food pantry, but has other onsite programs connected to the United Way including: counseling sessions, money management classes, and Meals on Wheels.
The food collection started when the Eagles hosted clinics at local soccer clubs. The team asked participating players to donate non-perishable food items. Due to the success, these efforts will continue throughout the year. Anyone interested in supporting these efforts can contact FGCU coach Jim Blankenship at (239) 590-7571.
The men’s soccer team volunteered Monday and Tuesday at the Community Cooperative Ministries Inc. Soup Kitchen on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in Fort Myers.
The players helped serve food to more than 100 working poor or homeless men, women, and children during their time at the kitchen. The team prepared fruit, salad, bread, meatloaf, and desserts to distribute to those individuals.
