Prep Report: Vikings score easy victory

Elizabeth Norton pitched in a game-high 19 points with Katlyn Payne knocking down 16 points to go with eight rebounds to lead Bishop Verot to a 72-21 victory over Naples in girls’ basketball action Wednesday night.

The Vikings raced to a 21-5 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back as the Eagles struggled to put points on the board.

The Vikings (4-0) play at Island Coast Thursday night.

Girls Soccer

Bishop Verot 1, Lemon Bay 1: Kayley Clay knocked in Verot’s only goal with about eight minutes left in the first half, a shot that stood up as the game-tying goal against Lemon Bay.

Goalkeepers Chryssie Gibson and Kailyn Rizzo each made one save for the Vikings (9-1-1), who host Island Coast at 6 p.m. Thursday before the boys’ teams kick off at 7:30.

Cape Coral 3, Port Charlotte 0: Two second-half goals sealed Cape Coral’s victory at Port Charlotte.

Sophomore Samantha Morreal scored the eventual game-winning goal in the first half with an assist by sophomore Emily Daniels.

Freshman Megan Terzak and junior Carole Farella scored the second-half goals for the Seahawks. Both were assisted by sophomore Jamie Smith.

Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Kopale rang up the shutout by making 11 saves.

The Seahawks (6-2-2) play at Barron Collier Monday night.

Volleyball

Bishop Verot senior libero Katie Mosher and setter, Ciarra Brown have been named to the National AVCA High School All American Top 100 List for 2009.

AVCA recognizes the Top 100 High School athletes each year through the AVCA All American High School Program.

Additionally, Mosher recently earned the Florida AVCA Player of the Week award for Nov. 8-15 (through all class state regional finals).

Brown is the FACA District 3A Player of the Year and Mosher, also on the FACA All Area District Team, was selected to the FACA Florida All Star team as one of two liberos across the state. She will compete in the FACA State All Star match on Dec. 5 in New Port Ritchey.

Brown and Mosher recently signed national letters-of-intent scholarships to play NCAA Division 1 volleyball at Virginia Commonwealth and Florida State University, respectively.
