The Mariner Tritons went away from their tendency in a season-opening high school basketball game Tuesday night against visiting Island Coast.

Instead of relying on the three-point shot, one of their strengths last season, they took the ball to the basket with success in an 84-39 victory.

Ricardo Barsesa led the charge with 17 points, Justin Emmons tallied 16 points and eight rebounds and Kameron Beach finished with 15 points and seven assists.

“We did a good job getting to the basket,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “I challenged them all week not to settle for the three, and I thought they did a good job with that.”

The Tritons (1-0) never looked back after building a 30-10 lead through the opening quarter. They continued to get to the free throw line, finished 21-of-31. Beach sank 7-of-8 from the line and Emmons made all four attempts.

The Gators (0-2) are in their first full varsity season. They opened Monday with an 80-60 loss at Cypress Lake.

Senior Bryan Lopez hit two three-pointers and scored 12 points to lead the Gators.
