Military life

Mariner High senior Matt Isherwood and Ida Baker seniors Natalia Ortiz and Derek West are among 22 students in Southwest Florida nominated to U.S. service academies, congressman Connie Mack announced Monday.

The students in Florida’s 14th congressional district received nominations to the service academies for the Class of 2014.

Isherwood, a multi-sport student-athlete, and West, who was part of Baker’s state-qualifying cross country team, each received nominations to the U.S. Military Academy.

Ortiz, a goalkeeper for Baker’s soccer team, was nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy.

The process of securing a nomination is highly competitive. Students must also apply to the academy and meet their competitive standards, in addition to applying for a nomination from a member of Congress.
