Seahawks whip Mustangs 27-0
Many concerns had surrounded the Cape Coral High football team for their playoff game Friday night against Bradenton Lakewood Ranch after the Seahawks lost senior running back Spencer Boyd. Boyd, a Notre Dame commit, injured his knee during a district game against Ida Baker on November 6.
Fortunately for Cape, there was Jeremy Davis. The future Miami Hurricane rushed for three touchdowns in Boyd’s absence en route to a 27-0 shutout of the Mustangs that set up a rematch of the Seahawks’ spring game against Charlotte. The Tarpons blew out the Seahawks 44-0 back in May.
“Charlotte’s coming here next week,” said Cape coach Mike Goebbel, who already had been informed of Charlotte’s first round playoff win over Ida Baker. “These guys get another shot at them.”
“I’m looking forward just to win,” Davis said of the game against Charlotte. “The Spring Game’s going to be the motivation for us.”
The Seahawks (11-0) were hitting on all cylinders against Lakewood Ranch. Cape’s offense put up 341 total yards, the defense forced five turnovers, made two goal-line stands, and Prince Holloway contributed on special teams with a 40-yard punt return for a touchdown.
“When you’re limping along in a game like that, and then someone goes and makes a big return, it starts getting everybody sparked,” said Goebbel. “That definitely motivated this team tonight.”
Following Holloway’s return late in the first quarter, the Mustangs had a scoring opportunity early, but Seth Browning’s field goal was blocked by Davis.
Davis made the first offensive score by taking a direct snap out of the wildcat formation and then making a five-yard gain.
The Mustangs then had another shot to shorten the deficit, but Reginald Lindsey’s pass on third-and-goal from the 4 was picked off at the goal line by Cape defensive back Chris Johnson.
Late in the third quarter, Davis struck again, breaking a tackle behind the line of scrimmage on a halfback dive play and turning it into a 70-yard touchdown run, putting the game out of reach. Davis later added his third touchdown, a nine-yard score on a halfback sweep, midway through the fourth.
Davis finished with 172 all-purpose yards.
“(Davis) needed to play more minutes than he’s used to,” said Goebbel. “With the situation he was put in, I think he did a great job tonight.”
“I was drinking a lot of fluids and making sure my body was ready,” said Davis. “I was practicing hard, and taking a lot of reps to get ready for tonight mentally, physically, and all-around.”
The shutout is the third of the season for a Seahawks’ defense that is allowing just 11.5 points per game.
“Everybody contributed tonight,” said Goebbel. “Anytime you can put a goose egg up on the board, you know you’ve done a good job.”
