Senior Games seeks volunteers
Volunteers are needed to help with the 18th Florida Senior Games State Championships that will take place in Cape Coral and Lee County next month.
At least 40 more volunteers are needed to join the hundreds that begin duties starting on Dec. 2, when event preparations begin for the nine-day event Dec. 5-13. Events are scheduled at sites managed by Lee County Parks & Recreation and Cape Coral Parks & Recreation.
More than 2,000 senior athletes have signed up to compete. Volunteers can apply to work any of the 24 sports offered. Volunteers do not need to have an extensive sports backgrounds to help out.
A volunteer application can be found online at www.leeparks.org/volunteers.
Prospective volunteers, age 14 and over, also can contact Lee parks volunteer services coordinator Kathy Cahill at (239) 432-2159. For their efforts, volunteers will be fed and receive a Florida Senior Games State Championships volunteer T-shirt.
Meanwhile, senior athletes have an extra two days to register for the games with the online registration deadline having been extended to 11:59 p.m. Nov. 22.
Athletes wishing to take advantage of the extra two days should visit www.flasports.com and register online.
All local qualifying events have been completed, but athletes are allowed to compete in 10 sports defined as “open” events. “Open” sports not requiring a qualifying event include archery, billiards, bocce, pickleball, powerlifting, race walk, racquetball, road race, softball and volleyball.
The 5K road race on Dec. 12 at Rotary Park is open to all ages and will accept on-site registration the morning of the event.
