Prep Report: Tritons stumble 1-0
The Mariner Tritons had the majority of scoring chances, but Immokalee came through with the only goal approximately 30 minutes into the first half to turn back the Tritons 1-0 Monday night.
The Tritons had multiple chances before and after that goal, including “eight or nine” corner kicks, according to coach Martin Cardenas.
“I thought for the most part we controlled the game,” he said. “Things just didn’t bounce our way offensively.”
Matt Brust made eight saves for the Tritons, while Matt Isherwood and John Teeter led the defensive effort.
Mario Perone and Gabby Rojas gave the Tritons a lift in their first match since coming over from football.
Mariner (2-1) hosts Cypress Lake Tuesday.
Cypress Lake 5, Island Coast 1: Senior Dan Chica buried the lone goal for the Gators in the bottom left corner, but the visiting Panthers prevailed by four goals.
Senior Dimitri Papadimitrou assisted Chica’s goal. Goalkeeper John Simpson made nine saves for the Gators (0-3).
The Gators open District 3A-12 play Tuesday at LaBelle.
Ida Baker 4, Gulf Coast 0: Four different players scored for the Ida Baker Bulldogs and the defense was equally as effective in a victory over visiting Gulf Coast.
Goalkeeper Jose Zuniga made 10 saves.
Nick Presti, Carlos Zuniga, Brandon Stevens, Marlon Herrera scored goals. Presti, Havey Rincon and Jon Alvarez tallied assists.
The Bulldogs (2-1) host Estero Tuesday.
Cape Coral 8, Lehigh 0: Sophomore goalkeeper Santi Villamil recorded his fourth straight shutout to begin the season, and the Seahawks routed Lehigh.
Caio Amaral and Kevin Lopera scored two goals each for the Seahawks (4-0) and Guillermo Duque had two assists.
Cape hosts Fort Myers Tuesday in a key district match.
Girls Soccer
Cape Coral 8, Lehigh 0: Sam Morreal scored two goals leading the visiting Seahawks to a one-sided victory over Lehigh.
None of the Seahawk goalkeepers faced a shot, but usual starting keeper Amanda Kopale scored on a penalty kick to help the offensive output.
Carina Powell, Christina Hunt, Joanna Russell, Megan Turzak and Emily Daniels each had one goal.
Cape (3-1) visits Fort Myers Tuesday.
North Fort Myers 4, Evangelical Christian 4: Both North Fort Myers and host Evangelical Christian had the comeback spirit. The end result was a tie.
Melinda Lukas scored two goals and had one assist for the Knights (3-1-1), as they fought back from a 2-0 halftime deficit. The Knights led 4-3 with two minutes left, but ECS scored late to make it 4-4.
Casey Gentile also had two goals for the Knights, and Alex Smith had one assist.
North hosts Riverdale Tuesday.
Girls Basketball
Cypress Lake 48, Island Coast 29: After a dismal first quarter, the visiting Island Coast Gators charged back against Cypress Lake, but the Panthers pulled away once more for a season-opening win.
Cypress Lake reached the regional playoffs last season. It was a good first test for Island Coast, which trimmed the deficit to five in the third quarter.
“They have a good team,” Island Coast coach Jerry Ellis said of the Panthers. “They have two of the better interior players in Aimee McCann and Raven Grimm.”
Immon Pommerleau was the lone Gator in double figures, finishing with 11 points. Lindsay Ellis sank one three-pointer and scored seven points.

Charlotte 42, Mariner 16: The Mariner Tritons, 0-25 last season, opened this season with a 26-point loss to visiting Charlotte.
Senior Ashley Mercado and sophomore Megan Heroux led the Tritons.
Mariner hosts North Fort Myers Tuesday.
